Lesson Blog Jan 17th, 2026 - Hatsugama (First Kettle) No.1

The plum blossoms at Shōrai-an have begun to bloom. Under a clear blue sky, the first lesson of the year, the "Hatsugama tea ceremony," takes place.

We gather at 9:30 a.m. and begin preparations for the 10:30 a.m. seating. Round seating for waiting area are lined up, and warter is sprinkled on the roji garden path. Once the nijiriguchi (a small crawl-in entrance) is little opened, preparations are complete.

First, the host greets the guests at the entrance with a white feather and invites them into the tea room.

The hanging scroll on the alcove reads “ZuiSetsu," meaning auspicious snow, a sign of a bountiful harvest. It was hung wishing for a plentiful rice crop and a bright, prosperous year.

After the charcoal preparation, we served light refreshments. Each guest's contribution was beautifully arranged. The soup looked delicious too. The sake is“Nanakanba Junmai Shiborishina" (Hikami Sake Brewery General Partnership, Shimane).

After having the main sweet "Hanabira-mochi" (Ishii Confectionery, Yokohama), leave the tea room for the mid-ceremony break.
